Young Swedes are driving the evolution of cryptocurrencies

Increasing trend in the ownership of cryptocurrencies in Sweden according to a new report from EY and K33 Research. Almost half of cryptocurrency owners in Sweden are under the age of 30. It is much more common for men to own cryptocurrencies compared to women. A total of 7 percent of Swedes own some form of digital currency, according to the survey. The analysis shows that within a decade, about 20 percent of Sweden's population will own cryptocurrencies.

Young Swedes are driving the evolution of cryptocurrencies

The survey by consulting and auditing firm EY and crypto survey company K33 Research with over 1000 respondents in Sweden shows an increase in ownership of cryptocurrencies. According to the survey, there are 550,000 Swedes or 7 percent of the Swedish population over the age of 18 who own some form of digital currency.

- Cryptocurrency in Sweden is on the path of unprecedented growth. With price levels appealing to the public, nearly two-thirds of Swedish crypto owners have started investing in cryptocurrencies after 2019, says Anders Helseth, head of research at K33 Research.

Millennials in Sweden are driving the cryptocurrency trend

Those driving this trend are the millennial generation, 46 percent of Swedish cryptocurrency owners are under 30 years old and 40 percent are between 30-50 years old. There are also differences between the sexes and men are more active. The survey shows that men are three times more likely to own cryptocurrencies compared to women.

The survey also points to a strong trend for the coming years for cryptocurrencies. The analysis shows that as many as 1.6 million Swedes, or about 20 percent of the Swedish population over the age of 18, will own cryptocurrencies within the next decade.

- Given the positive reception and rapid development of cryptocurrencies among Swedes, especially the young generation, we see a possible threefold increase in the next ten years. This is a clear signal of a broad investment culture and should be taken seriously by both established investors and regulators in a year when the EU Markets in Crypto Assets Regulation (MiCAR) comes into force,” says Mads Ribe, Associate Partner at EY.

In total, the survey has 4000 respondents in the Nordic countries and this is the first time it has been conducted in Sweden. The survey has been conducted for several years in Norway by EY & K33 Research. The Nordic Report will be launched on 11 April 2024.
