The number of Norwegians who own shares is steadily increasing, according to recent statistics from AksjEnorge, and in 2023 it was another record. Through 2023, the number of stockholders increased by 16,700. At the end of last year, there were 588,500 Norwegians who owned shares and equity certificates on the Oslo Stock Exchange with a total value of NOK 178.3 billion.
The data in this survey originates from Euronext Securities, while StockNorway collects and analyzes the data, both year-on-year, and quarterly.
- Shares remain popular and we see the number of shareholders continuing to grow. In terms of value, we are also experiencing an increase, but in percentages the increase is lower than the main index and the fund index,” Kristin Skaug, CEO of Aksjenorge, told Kaupr.io. Skaug explains this by the fact that, despite experts' advice on diversification, most shareholders choose to invest in a small number of different stocks. “It can therefore appear that people have either “missed out” on the most profitable stocks that have done the best, or they have withdrawn some money from the market, says Skaug.
According to StockNorway, prior to the 2020 pandemic, it was common for the number of shareholders to change up or down by between 1,000 and 6,000 shareholders each year. Since 2018, there has been an increase every year. At most - during the pandemic - the number of shareholders increased by over 90,000 in 2020.
Of last year's increase of 16,700 shareholders, 6,000 came in Q4. According to Aksjenorge, there is a high probability that the increase in both the fourth quarter and in 2023 below one is mainly due to the IPO of Norconsult and the sale of Sparebanken Sør in November.
