What is it really like in the metaverse, a year and a half after the hype surrounding the metaverse was at its highest? We've used Apple's launch of Vision Pro and a metaverse conference in Copenhagen as a backdrop to talk to two experts, Joachim Benno and Keith Mellingen. If you set aside the equivalent of a school class lesson on this video call, we promise you that afterwards you will be left with an increased insight into the concepts, contexts, status and opportunities that the virtual internet of the future may offer.
We start fresh by asking, after hearing terms such as metaverse, immersive, spatial computing, AR/VR/XR, and spatial computing: What should we call the animal?
Both Joachim and Keith believe that the crucial thing is not what terms one uses, but that one understands that we are now on the leap to a new industrial revolution, and so focus on utility for people, businesses and society. In the conversation, we look at both the industrial and commercial metaverse, and what it will take to get consumers to adopt these technologies. We talk about digital twins, about the blockchain, about young people's gaming habits and about the fusion between AR/VR technology and artificial intelligence. We talk about digital economies, GDPR and privacy. And we're talking about the power of platforms and the requirement for transparency.
Joachim Benno has previously worked in Meta, currently runs the company Metaverse Consulting and is the head of the Law Federation's Tech Forum. Keith Mellingen is cluster manager at industry association VRINN and VR/AR director at Rainfall.
